I realize there are those who aren’t big baseball fans like me but I assume those who aren’t are probably a fan of another sport and have experienced heartbreak playing it or watching it being played. I love the Texas Rangers (who are in the midst of their worst season in a long time) and previous to October 27th, 2011 the Rangers hadn’t experienced real heartbreak until this happened:
Instead of inserting the image above, I could have played a clip of David Freese hitting the game-tying triple in the bottom of the ninth with two outs OR Lance Berkman’s game-tying single in the bottom of the 10th inning with two outs (AGAIN!!) OR David Freese (I hate that name) stepping up (AGAIN!!!!!!!!) and hitting the game-winning home-run in the 11th… but I just couldn’t.
I can’t bear to watch any of those things again because it just brings back too much pain.
Much in the same way this may bring back too much pain for Chicago Cubs fans:
In 2003, the Chicago Cubs, who had endured over a hundred years of not winning a World Series were on the cusp of their first appearance in the World Series since 1945. That’s when, with one out in the eighth inning, Steve Bartman deflected a ball that Moises Alou of the Cubs probably would have caught:
So, much in the same way I would want to burn a 2011 World Series t-shirt, I am sure that this shirt would undoubtedly make a perfect gag gift for any rabid cubs fan (because there are no Marlins fans).
What’s sort of sports heartbreak have you experienced?
